Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview
This role lives within the System Electronics Mechanical team. This team is responsible for designing the pilot inceptors, air data probe, and numerous computer assemblies across the S4, as well as mechanically designing next-generation perception suites for enabling autonomy for future aircraft. We’re seeking a passionate, hands-on, and fundamentally strong engineer to own designs from concept to certification, work cross-functionally to optimize vehicle-level solutions, and ensure the safe, lightweight, and reliable delivery of electromechanical assemblies to aircraft. (We're open to earlier career through senior level candidates for this position).
Responsibilities
Own designs from concept to certification, including:
- Rapid prototyping and development testing
- Mass optimization, stress analysis, and thermal analysis
- Troubleshooting issues in manufacturing, testing, and in the field
- Driving system safety, reliability, requirements, and integration considerations
- Designing for manufacturability and cost at the component and assembly levels
- Communicate design risks, complex concepts, and data clearly and honestly
- Collaborate effectively and with humility across multiple areas of expertise
Required
- B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent)
- 1+ years of demonstrated working experience in relevant industry, including internships, co-ops, academic research, or project experience
- Proficiency with CAD (e.g., CATIA, NX, SolidWorks) for complex surfacing, part design, and assemblies
- Strong fundamentals in statics, dynamics, heat transfer, and materials science
Desired
- M.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent)
- 3+ years of relevant industry experience, concept through production
- Familiarity with DO-160G mechanical requirements for aerospace applications
- Familiarity with both low-voltage and high-voltage electromechanical designs
- Experience with finite element analysis (e.g., Abaqus, Ansys, SolidWorks)
Please still apply if you don’t meet all items in the desired section! Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. We are dedicated to building a diverse and effective workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
