Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview
Advanced TIG Welder & Fabricator (Hydrogen R&D – Contract)
Joby Aviation is seeking an expert Advanced TIG Welder for a contract engagement within our Hydrogen R&D Team. This role is critical to the development of experimental hydrogen propulsion systems, focusing on the high-precision fabrication of specialized tubing, cryogenic components, and test fixtures. We are looking for a contractor who can execute high-integrity welds for flight-critical R&D applications where leak-proof precision is paramount
Responsibilities
- Hydrogen Systems Fabrication: Execute ultra-high-precision TIG welding for experimental hydrogen tubing, manifolds, and cryogenic assemblies.
- R&D Fixturing: Design and build custom, one-off jigs and test fixtures to support hydrogen hardware validation.
- Engineering Partnership: Collaborate directly with Hydrogen R&D engineers to solve complex fluid-handling challenges and provide feedback on design for manufacturability (DFM).
- Full Cycle Ownership: Independently manage R&D job requests, from initial setup and material prep to final TIG welding and post-process inspection.
- Agile Prototyping: Rapidly iterate on prototype designs, identifying creative solutions for non-standard manufacturing problems in a fast-paced environment.
Required
- Experience: 6+ years of professional TIG welding experience, specifically in high-stakes R&D (Aerospace, Motorsports, or High-Pressure Fluid Systems).
- Tubing Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in TIG welding thin-wall tubing and various metals (Aluminum, Stainless, Chromoly, Titanium).
- High-Integrity Welding: Proven ability to produce clean, x-ray quality welds; experience with 1G through 6G positions and technical GD&T callouts.
- R&D Mindset: Ability to pivot quickly between projects as research priorities shift, maintaining extreme attention to detail.
- Tools & Systems: Comfortable using Slack, Zoom, and digital ticketing (Jira/Kanban) to track and document R&D deliverables.
Desired
- Helium Leak Testing: Familiarity with helium leak checking procedures and equipment to ensure vacuum-jacketed or high-pressure integrity.
- Hydrogen/Cryo Experience: Experience welding cryogenic components or high-pressure fluid systems is a significant plus.
- Exotic Metals: Proficiency with 321 Stainless Steel, 4140, and Titanium.
- Standards: Familiarity with AWS D17.1 (Aerospace) or ASME B31.3 (Process Piping).
- Availability: Willingness to work 9-hour days and overtime as hydrogen testing milestones require.
