Overview
Joby is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Electric Powertrain team in San Carlos, CA. This role will work primarily on the New Production Introduction (NPI) - developing, analyzing, testing, refining and launching production of one of the world's most sophisticated and power dense Electric Propulsion System (EPU). The candidate will participate in the product development from concept phase through validation, production and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Design, development and technical management of engineering components, of both simple and complex, within the Electric Propulsion Unit’s Stator and Rotor and it’s interfaces with the rest of the aircraft
- Stewardship of these components through validation testing, FAA certification and beyond.
- Exemplify technical excellence
- Hold design reviews and be able to demonstrate decisions based on sound engineering.
- Ownership and maintenance the BOM and 3D CATIA assembly database for the Electric Propulsion Unit
- Change management of parts, assemblies and documentation
Required
- BS or MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering discipline
- Proven experience working in Aerospace, Electric Vehicle Powertrain or an industry with rigorous and sophisticated engineering/manufacturing standards
- Superior critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Subject matter expertise in multiple areas of Mechanical Engineering including Design, Materials, Manufacturing Processes, Structural and Thermal analyses, High Voltage Electrical Systems and Reliability Engineering
- Demonstrated drive to deliver on ambitious schedules, even and especially if unconventional & creative solutions are necessary to do so
- Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing and ASME drawing standards
- Highly proactive attitude with the ability to manage multiple assignments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- A demonstrated record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate in a fast-paced dynamic environment, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being kind to others.
Desired
- 2+ years of working experience in Aerospace, Electric Vehicle Powertrain or an industry with rigorous and sophisticated engineering/manufacturing standards
- Professional experience on the design, development and manufacturing of electric machines (motors)
- Proficiency in tolerance analysis, metrology, and common inspection equipment and methodology
- Proficiency in Familiar with BOM structuring, Engineering Change Process Management in ENOVIA
- Working knowledge of FEA principles
- Hands-on experience working within aircraft certification program
- Excellent understanding of FAR Part 23 and 27 regulations
- Hands-on experience in designing and carrying out related tests for both model correlation and design validation
- Hands-on experience in material tests for generating material model input
- Experience in Design for 5-axis CNC manufacturing
- Experience in vibrational and fatigue analysis
- Experience in FE application in reliability (stress-strength, structural life prediction, etc.)

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $79,900 - $130,900/year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
