Overview
Joby Aviation is looking for engineers experienced with civil aviation certification to join our growing team. This role will serve as an internal Subject Matter Expert as well as a primary external point of contact with regulatory agencies and industry standards groups for aircraft, system, and equipment-level aspects of the Energy Storage and Distribution System.
Certification engineers will work closely with multiple design engineering and test teams to ensure designs comply with all federal airworthiness regulations. This position requires a solid understanding of aircraft systems, system development, and industry-specific certification processes. It is preferred that this individual be an FAA DER, a candidate, or willing and qualified to become one. The most important traits at Joby are a positive attitude towards the project, hard work ethic, being able to self-manage and learn new skills. Forward-thinking will be highly regarded as well.
The Energy Storage Systems Certification Engineer will be responsible for certification aspects of some or all systems and equipment related to:
- Batteries
- Electrical Power Distribution
- Wiring
Responsibilities
- Developing, reviewing, and approving certification-related documents, including
- Issue Papers, Special Conditions, Equivalent Levels of Safety, etc.
- Certification Plans and Summaries
- Test Plans and Reports
- Design and Analysis Reports
- Requests for Conformity, Statements of Compliance
- FAA technical interface meeting preparation, participation, and follow-up coordination
- Working with and mentoring multiple engineering teams with a mix of aerospace and non-aerospace backgrounds
- Provide design guidance on system architecture and schematics, subsystem trade studies, component details, wiring diagrams and detail drawing releases
- Advise design teams regarding interpretation of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 23 and its compliance
- Planning out test campaigns, overseeing test article fabrication, and witnessing tests in order to demonstrate that applicable designs show compliance with airworthiness standards.
- DER witness for equipment qualification testing, systems integration testing, and ground and flight testing
- Provide 8110.3 compliance findings to the Code of Federal Regulations Part 23
- Support SAE ARP4754A company audits for FAA Systems Reviews
- System safety assessment review, verification, and validation (SFHA, PSSA, SSA)
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering; Electrical, Aerospace Engineering preferred
- Minimum 10+ years of aerospace industry experience in aircraft development and civil certification
- Satisfies the basic qualifications for becoming a Designated Engineering Representative (DER) per the FAA Order 8100.8D and FAA Order 8110.37F
- Knowledge of and experience with FAA Part 23, Part 25, Part 27, and/or Part 29 certification regulations
- Understanding and application of development assurance processes per SAE ARP4754A
- Expert knowledge of and experience with safety assessment process, methods, and analyses (FHA, FMEA/FMECA, FTA, CCA) used in safety assessments (PSSA, SSA) per SAE ARP4761
- Expert knowledge of and experience with DO-160G environmental qualification
- Excellent verbal and technical writing skills in the English language
- Collaborates effectively between multidisciplinary teams
- Self-sufficient and self-starter
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Docs
Desired
- Current consultant DER for the FAA
- Previous experience managing complex sets of requirements
- Previous experience preparing and presenting design reviews for complex, highly integrated systems
- Previous experience defining system controls, crew indications, and flight manual procedures
- Previous experience in testing, including instrumenting, data acquisition, and documenting and analyzing results
- Previous experience with battery design and qualification, specifically RTCA/DO-311A Minimum Operational Performance Standards for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries and Battery Systems
- Whole-aircraft FAA certification program experience, Part 23 or Part 27 preferred
- Experience and involvement with industry groups to develop consensus standards
- Private pilot certificate or higher
- Experience in Software/Hardware Audits (DO-254 & DO-178C)
- Familiar with Siemens Polarion requirements management tool
- Experience using Atlassian tools including Jira and Confluence
- Familiar with Dassault Systems engineering and management tools (Enovia)
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $135,100 - $225,200 annually. The compensation package offered will be determined by location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
