Trust & Safety is foundational to Hinge’s mission of helping people find meaningful connections. We are looking for a Senior Director of Engineering to lead the organization responsible for protecting our community and enabling safe, authentic experiences. You will oversee engineers (including managers) across multiple product teams, partnering closely with Product, AI/ML, and Data to set strategy and ensure organizational health.
This role requires a senior organizational leader who can operate across a broad surface area - structuring teams, scaling managers, and driving execution across complex, user-facing systems. While Trust & Safety is the domain, success in this role is defined by improving user experience and trust, not just mitigating risk. A key component of this role is outward-facing leadership: building partnerships across Match Group and the broader industry to anticipate trends and invest in future-proof capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Strategy & Organizational Health: Lead the Trust & Safety engineering org, defining multi-quarter roadmaps in partnership with cross-functional leadership. Hire and coach engineering managers, building a strong leadership bench and fostering a culture of high standards, accountability, and ownership.
- Execution Excellence: Drive predictable delivery across multiple teams, balancing urgent risk response with long-term product and platform investments. Establish scalable operating rhythms for planning, technical reviews, and incident learnings.
- Technical Leadership: Provide oversight for T&S platforms (detection, enforcement, appeals, identity) and ensure strong system design across backend, platform, and ML-adjacent systems.
- Product Partnership: Partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and AI/ML to define strategy and deliver user-centric solutions that improve trust and overall user experience.
- Partnerships: Build relationships with Match Group leaders and cross-functional partners (Legal, Policy) to align on priorities and navigate complex tradeoffs.
- AI Change Management: In close partnership with Product and AI leaders, modernize enforcement and user experiences with AI-enabled workflows that are measurable, accountable, and trusted by users.
What We're Looking For
- Experience: 10+ years in software engineering (distributed systems at scale) and 4+ years managing managers, with a track record of leading and scaling teams of 20+ engineers.
- Technical Judgment: Strong grasp of architecture, reliability, data/ML-adjacent systems, and mobile + backend collaboration.
- Product & User Mindset: Demonstrated focus on building user-centric products that improve trust and experience - not just protecting the business or enforcing policy.
- Domain Expertise: Experience in Trust & Safety, abuse prevention, fraud, moderation workflows, identity, user reporting, integrity, or regulated/high-risk environments is strongly preferred.
- Execution & Ownership: Strong bias toward action, with a track record of driving complex, cross-team initiatives in fast-moving environments.
- Operational Agility: Comfort operating in high-urgency environments, managing incident response without sacrificing long-term quality.
- Strategic Thinking: Relentless focus on driving user value whilst navigating regulatory requirements
- Experience partnering with AI/ML teams on detection, classification, or GenAI-related risk mitigation.
- Background in regulated or safety-sensitive domains (marketplaces, fintech, social platforms).
- Familiarity with T&S operations workflows, case management, and policy-to-product translation.
