About the Role
Match Group’s Hyperconnect team is seeking a highly motivated, experienced and strategically minded legal expert to lead legal support for our fast-evolving suite of apps and services based and developed out of South Korea.
These businesses, standing at the forefront of the AI-revolution, are designed to spark new connections across cultures and borders. We are seeking a leader for our small high-performing legal team in Seoul, who will play a critical leadership role within Hyperconnect, advising senior stakeholders within both Hyperconnect and Match Group’s Asia business units.
The ideal candidate is a confident operator with sound judgment, a “get to yes”mindset, possesses strong commercial instincts, product counseling experience, with the ability to drive cross-functional positive outcomes in a rapidly-evolving, high-growth environment, while operating adeptly within a matrixed global legal and policy function within a multi-brand global company.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the lead legal advisor for MG’s Korea-originated initiatives and international expansion, providing pragmatic, solutions-oriented counsel to business and functional stakeholders, in close coordination with global legal, privacy, trust and safety teams at Match Group HQ. Key internal stakeholders include: the Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Commercial business teams, along with peers within the regional Legal and Privacy teams.
- Work with a high degree of ownership and autonomy on Korea-specific legal matters, while recognising that certain legal, regulatory, privacy, trust & safety, and reputational decisions are owned (or co-owned) at the global level, requiring consultation, alignment, or deferral to Match Group Asia and HQ functional leaders.
- Help to identify, anticipate, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks associated with the launch of new features and technologies, and into new markets, especially given the evolving tech landscape and ambiguous operating environments.
- Draft, negotiate, and oversee complex marketing, commercial, and product-related contracts, policies, and governance frameworks; striving for consistency with global standards, playbooks, and risk positions set by Match Group.
- Mentor and manage junior legal team members, helping to constantly up-level their skills, and advocating for their professional growth.
- Champion a collaborative and solutions-driven legal culture, fostering trust with internal non-legal (e.g. product / marketing) teams, while constructively challenging decisions where needed to safeguard legal and reputational interests.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- A law degree from an accredited law program and admission to the Bar in South Korea and/or US, or other notable Commonwealth jurisdictions.
- Minimum 6-8 years’ PQE, with prior in-house legal department experience; prior tech-company experience is strongly preferred, prior MNC and/or portfolio company experience is a bonus.
- Business level Korean and business level English (both written and spoken).
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in a lean legal function, paired with the maturity to recognise when issues require input or decision-making from global functional experts or senior legal leadership.
- Astute ability to advocate for business priorities while upholding legal and regulatory integrity.
- Familiarity with the demands of a small legal team, able to lead and inspire junior lawyers, adept at guiding them on drafting, negotiating, writing and research skills.
- Able to manage competing expectations from various stakeholders, while helping to keep project timelines on-track, and maintain execution discipline in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience navigating a cross-functional, multinational team, welcoming diversity and supporting inclusivity, including a willingness to jump in and assist with no ego.
- Experience with general consumer protection, data protection, IP, digital media, internet industry laws are strongly preferred.
- Excellent communication, analytical and interpersonal skills, with a high level of attention to detail, strong sense of ownership and accountability.
