About the Role
Hinge is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead and expand our Artificial Intelligence (AI) Platform team. This team is the backbone of our AI and Machine Learning (ML) operations, providing the essential infrastructure and tools that empower our Data Scientists and ML Engineers to efficiently build, test, and deploy models. In doing so, you'll make a meaningful difference in Hinge users' lives by driving the technology that brings them together.
As the Director of AI Platform, you'll drive strategic initiatives while also contributing as a hands-on engineer, ensuring practical and scalable solutions. The AI Platform team is set to grow to a total of five ML Platform Engineers by the end of 2024, and this role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of Hinge's ML and AI landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Set and drive the vision, goals, strategy, and roadmap to build out our AI Platform infrastructure and a​ccelerate the delivery of models to production.
  • Ensure engineering outcomes meet or exceed established standards of excellence in code quality, system design, scalability, and reliability.
  • Manage, hire, and scale a high-functioning team of engineers.
  • Participate in technical design discussions.
  • Collaborate closely with ML Engineers, Data Scientists, and Product Managers to understand their needs, translate their needs into customer problems, and work with the team to identify and prioritize opportunities to accelerate the AI/ML development and deployment process.
  • Partner with other Engineering disciplines to integrate the AI/ML workflow into Hinge’s stack.
  • Define and develop best practices and processes to support efficient team operations.
  • Engage in hands-on work and software delivery while building out the team.

What We're Looking

  • 10+ years of experience as an ML, backend, data, or platform engineer, with 4+ years of experience in ML/AI.
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience ideally in an AI platform role.
  • Expertise in building and supporting ML ops and data infrastructure.
  • Comfort with cloud native infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership experience in aligning platform strategy with product and business objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive execution to exceed business objectives.
  • Passion for developing, coaching, and scaling direct reports.
  • Effective communication with individuals from diverse technical and non-technical backgrounds.
  • Strong ability to lead and evaluate build vs buy trade offs.
  • Nice to have: Previous experience with AWS, Argo, Kafka, Kubenetes, Terraform, Databricks, Flink, Ray, or other ML Ops tooling.
